How does a life surrendered to God become irresistible to a watching world?
When early Christians cared for plague victims while pagans fled in fear, their love became the most powerful apologetic for the gospel. Our surrendered life together is still the most compelling evidence that our God is real and His love transforms everything.
Day 6: The Surrendered Life as a Witness
"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." - John 13:35
Quickstart (1 Minute Commitment)
Today's Verse: John 13:35 - "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Greek Word: γινώσκω (ginóskó) - "to know, to perceive, to understand." This isn't just intellectual knowledge; it's knowledge gained through experience and observation. The world will see and experience the reality of our discipleship through our love.
Reflection Question: If someone were to observe your life for a week, would your love for other Christians be the most compelling evidence that you are a follower of Jesus?
Prayer: "Lord, let my life be a compelling witness to your love. May the way I love my brothers and sisters in Christ be so radically different from the world that people are forced to ask, 'What is the source of that love?' Make me a living, breathing advertisement for the gospel."
Story Time (5 Minute Commitment)
In the second century, a plague swept through the Roman Empire, killing up to a third of the population in some areas. The pagan response was driven by fear and self-preservation. People abandoned their sick family members, leaving them to die in the streets. Doctors refused to treat the afflicted. The social fabric of the empire began to unravel.
But the Christians responded differently. In a letter, Dionysius, a bishop from that time, described how the Christians, "heedless of danger, took charge of the sick, attending to their every need and ministering to them in Christ." They brought food and water to those who had been abandoned. They held the dying in their arms. Many of these Christian caregivers contracted the plague themselves and died, having made the ultimate sacrifice of love.
This extraordinary, self-sacrificial love had a profound effect on the pagan world. Sociologist Rodney Stark, in his book The Rise of Christianity, argues that the Christian response to this and other plagues was one of the primary drivers of the church's explosive growth. The pagans saw a community that cared for the weak, that did not fear death, and that loved one another with a supernatural love. They saw the gospel in action, and they were won over not by clever arguments, but by compelling love. The surrendered life of the early church was its most powerful witness.

A Call to Action: Living the Surrendered Life

The Daily Gethsemane
Start every day with a conscious act of surrender. Before you check your phone, before you look at your to-do list, find a quiet place and pray the prayer of Jesus: "Not my will, but yours be done." Offer your plans, your desires, and your very self to God for His purposes. Make this the foundational act of your day.
The Re-framing of Obedience
Begin to see God's commands not as a list of rules, but as a relational roadmap. When you read the Bible, ask not just "What does this say?" but "How is this an invitation to love God and love others?" This will transform your obedience from a duty to a delight.
The Practice of Humility
Actively look for opportunities to put others first. This could be as simple as letting someone go ahead of you in line, or as costly as giving up your time or resources for someone in need. Make it a daily practice to perform small acts of selfless service, and watch as God begins to break the power of pride in your life.
The Commitment to Community
If you are not already, get deeply involved in a local church. Don't just be a consumer; be a contributor. Join a small group, serve in a ministry, and begin to build authentic, vulnerable relationships. Make it your goal to be a person who "bears the burdens" of others and "speaks the truth in love."
The Embrace of the Cost
Finally, count the cost and embrace it. A surrendered life is not an easy life. It will cost you your comfort, your ambitions, and your autonomy. But as we have seen, the cost of non-surrender is infinitely higher. As Jim Elliot famously wrote, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."
Conclusion
The world is watching. They are tired of our arguments, our programs, and our political posturing. They are looking for something real, something authentic, something that has the power to change lives. The surrendered life, lived out in a community of love, is that something. It is the visible, tangible evidence that our God is real, that His love is powerful, and that His Son is the only hope for this broken world. Let's go, therefore, and be that evidence.

The Great Commission and the Great Commandment
Jesus' final words to his disciples were the Great Commission: "Go and make disciples of all nations..." (Matthew 28:19). But this commission is impossible to fulfill without the Great Commandment: "Love one another." Our love is the fuel and the foundation for our mission. The world will not listen to our message if they do not see it lived out in our relationships. The surrendered, loving community is the engine of the Great Commission.
